A dedicated team of artisans work behind the scenes to make costumes such as these possible for our Winter Musical.

As the curtains rise and the lights dim, the stage comes alive with the vibrant performances of this year’s Tabor musical, Footloose. While the spotlight often shines on the talented cast and directors, a driven team works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that every aspect of the show is nothing short of spectacular. Among these heroes is the musical costume crew, led by the dedicated Chinese Teacher Ms. Jocy Su, whose creative vision and attention to detail bring the characters to life through their wardrobe.

Under the guidance of Ms. Su, a small group, typically comprised of four to six students, collaborate to translate the Tabor musical team’s vision into reality. Drawing inspiration from past musical shows and characters, they craft mood boards, incorporating elements from other shows while infusing the current show’s unique flair. One of the critical aspects of their role is the customization of costumes to fit the specific needs of each production. Whether it is adding accessories or patches to enhance the original designs or incorporating vintage clothing to evoke a particular era or mood, the costume crew ensures that every detail contributes to the show’s overall aesthetic.

But their work continues beyond there. With a keen eye for detail, they measure each cast member to ensure that every costume fits them perfectly, enhancing both comfort and appearance on stage. Furthermore, close collaboration with other production team members, such as Coordinator of Performing Arts Ms. Jesse Hawley and Choral Music Teacher Dr. Tianxu Zhou, helps the crew create costumes that align seamlessly with the themes and visual elements of the show.

For Ms. Su, having dedicated six years to perfecting her craft, the ultimate satisfaction lies in seeing everything come together on performance day. From the costumes to lighting and stage props, she strives for a cohesive and polished presentation that captivates the audience from start to finish. The costume crew remains committed to adjusting and refining until the very last minute so that every aspect of the show is executed flawlessly.

As the Tabor community comes together to celebrate the success of this year’s musical, it is essential to recognize the contributions of those who work behind the scenes. The costume crew may not always be in the spotlight, but their dedication and creativity are instrumental in bringing the magic of the performance to life.
