On January 31, Tabor’s boys’ varsity basketball team blew out Groton School 83-38 at home to advance to 9-5. Sage Baptiste scored 17 on 7-11 from the field, AJ Sheppard added 11, and the bench, led by Daniel Sun (10 points) and Ant DiGiantommaso (8 points), scored 28 of the team’s points.
Despite Tabor scoring quickly off a Baptiste layup to start the game, both teams started relatively cold, unable to convert shots. Groton took their first and only lead of the game four minutes in with a three that put them up by one. Baptiste then responded with an and-one (although missed FT) to put Tabor back up, which stayed that way for the rest of the game. Aidan Smith then threw up a nice lob into layup for Isaac Saas. Groton was able to stick around at first, staying within a few points until Tabor pulled away around the six-minute mark, outscoring them 28-10 for the rest of the half, going up 42-22.
Many bench players were able to get first half minutes and contributed to 12 first half points. Tabor did a particularly good job getting to the line. Groton had 10 fouls in the first half alone (to Tabor’s only 5).
Coming out of half, Tabor went on a strong 12-2 run capitalizing off fast breaks. Even with some Groton 3s, the Seawolves held certainly more than an arm’s reach distance on the score board.
Smith threw up another lob, off the back board for Baptiste to throw down for a loud fast break dunk. DiGiantommaso also had an impressive block on a Groton three-point attempt, which he then converted into a fast break layup.
Tommy Murray and Gavin Brown hit two nice threes on back-to-back possessions followed shortly by another Daniel Sun three, which finished off the game as the Seawolves won it 83-38. Tabor’s bench unit had a nice showing with 28 points as mentioned earlier. Tabor also notably out-rebounded them by a wide margin.
Tabor was coming off an impressive 63-57 win against Rivers at home last Wednesday while Groton took a loss on Friday to St. Paul’s at home.
