While it is important to understand the incentives of going to the dining hall more and ensuring campus safety, upper campus is the only area without a food delivery box, which is a disadvantage to students living in those dorms. I investigated the distance between each dorm and the nearest food delivery box, and the results were clear.
The longest walk outside of upper campus to get to a food box from their dorm to a box was Matsumura to outside the Student Center, coming in at around 460 ft. A reasonable distance to walk, especially considering those students are already privilege by getting an obviously nicer dorm than most others. The longest walk of all dorms was around 1000 ft from Makepeace to outside the Student Center. Considering how far most buildings are from Makepeace, this walk is just another time when these boarders must commit a fair amount of time to walking. With so many dorms within a couple hundred feet of their box, it is unfair to choose certain dorms that have to walk nearly well over double the distance to collect their food.
I understand that having strangers on campus, especially in this era, is a risk, but there are many other times where strangers are welcomed to park behind the chapel. Every Monday night, for example, the chapel is filled with non-Tabor affiliated people. By reinstating the box that used to exist in front of Hitchcock and Makepeace, delivery drivers would come farther onto campus, but it would be a much less populated area than where there are currently boxes. The reasoning for removing the box originally was always unclear and is ultimately unfair to people living on upper campus. An unfair choice that affected only some unlucky students. Replacing the box is the only way to make dorms more equitable and inviting for everyone.
