I have never been asked for my top five favorite sodas, but if anyone decides to do so, I have my answer at the ready. Over the course of 18 years, I have had the chance to try a lot of sodas, and these particular five have earned their spot as my favorites. Granted, everyone has different opinions, and I want to iterate that this is my opinion, not a fact. I have no motive besides making my top five sodas public. So, without further ado, behold THE list of the best sodas.
Number one: Strawberries and Cream Dr. Pepper. People who have not had the privilege of tasting this paramount of beverages, I am sorry. It might be a little too sweet for some people, but the flavors just work. They perfectly complement each other, earning the top spot among my favorite soda.
Number two: Root Beer. It comes in second because of its sentimental value to me. It was the first soda I ever tried, and it was my favorite drink for most of my childhood. The flavor’s uniqueness stems from a sassafras root, which you could rationalize is healthy because it’s natural. I think it has remained a classic soda that has stayed popular for a long time.
Number three: Cherry Coke. It is similar to my first pick because the concept of an original soda flavor paired with fruit is one of the greatest inventions of the century. Cherry Coke just checks my boxes in what I want in a refreshing drink. I like a Classic Coke, but Cherry Coke is an elevated version. It is fantastic. This is a fact, not an opinion. Deal with it.
Number four: Dr. Pepper. I love Dr. Pepper; it is another certified classic. Some may say it tastes like cough syrup, but they don’t know what they’re talking about. Dr. Pepper has a unique taste that grows on you, just like coffee. Unlike most sodas, Diet Dr. Pepper is almost as good as the regular one. Fun fact: Dr. Pepper is the oldest soft drink in America, invented in 1885, predating Coca-Cola and Pepsi. It is the father of soda, and it would be a crime if it were not on my list.
Number five: Mr. Pibb. This is a controversial take that someone could talk me out of. It is exactly like Dr. Pepper, but it has something a little different about it that I just can’t describe. It’s not as good as Dr. Pepper, but the flavor is solid, and I think it is better than most sodas. It was originally named Peppo, until the company was sued by Dr. Pepper. I think Mr. Pibb wasn’t a good compromise but it is fine because it’s a banger. There are rumors on the street that Dr. Pepper is stopping production, and it is being replaced by Mr. Pibb which I really hope isn’t true, but I wouldn’t be too sad because Mr. Pibb is goated.
Honorable mention: Cream Soda. Cream Soda is like a sweeter root beer, but the flavor is respectable. It is soft, light, and refreshing. I think it is a great drink, particularly Cream Soda Dr. Pepper which I didn’t include because it is very similar to the Strawberries and Cream Dr. Pepper. Still, Cream Soda is a solid pick that is hard to argue with.
I hope I didn’t strike too many nerves with this list, but I remind you that this is my opinion and I do nott believe it to be an objective list. If you agree or disagree, I would be happy to agree/argue with you.
