Since 2017, the “Juntos” program at Tabor has aimed to foster meaningful connections between Tabor students and New Bedford’s immigrant community.
“The purpose of Juntos is to help students and community members come together, promoting mutual understanding and support,” says Director of Global Education Mr. Jon Sirois.
Juntos is more than just a service project; it is a platform for students to develop empathy through direct interactions. By working with local immigrant families, Tabor students form relationships that deepen their sense of responsibility and broaden their perspectives beyond the classroom. Through these experiences, students are encouraged to reflect on their own backgrounds and appreciate the diversity of personal experiences.
Mr. Sirois said, “Meaningfully connecting with others and enriching the lives of all parties involved is the ultimate goal of language.”
Despite language barriers, all students involved use their language-learning skills to foster genuine communication and connections. This initiative allows Tabor students to grow both linguistically and emotionally, while Juntos students receive English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) support. For both parties, it is an opportunity to share unique cultures and bond with members of the community.
With this year’s sessions starting on October 17, Juntos will continue to nurture a strong relationship between Tabor students and the immigrant community in New Bedford. Now in its eighth year, the program has remained committed to fostering empathy and reinforcing the importance of language as a bridge for meaningful connections. Each year, Juntos continues to create a sense of belonging and community for participants as they learn with and from each other.
