The Asian Student Coalition (also referred to as the ASC) is an affinity group dedicated to the Asian and Pacific Islander community at Tabor Academy. The ASC hosts meetings to plan fun activities, as well as to discuss more sensitive topics. The affinity group plans events to celebrate different cultural practices that represent those involved in the club and others in the Tabor community.
The group organized the Mid-Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year activities: lantern making, calligraphy, and mahjong, a tile-based game that originated in China. There are also other exciting projects coming up, such as bake sales to support the Asian American Advocacy Fund and plans to collaborate with Asian affinity groups from other schools.
Each member of the ASC has their own connection to the group that makes the space and the people in it feel safe and supported.
ASC Member Jessie Yu ’27 said, “It means a chance for me to connect with my friends, create new ideas that can support our community, and share stories among peers.”
Similarly, Michael Huang ‘26, added, “The ASC is a very special place.”
The ASC is also open to allies on special occasions. Allies may partake in some of the cultural events, such as the Mid-Autumn lantern making, and can even appear at meetings depending on the topic being discussed.
Tutu Hu ’26, one of the group’s leaders, said, “In meetings about activities, we welcome allies. However, meetings where we have serious closed-door conversations are reserved for members to maintain the safe affinity space.”
If you identify as Asian American or Pacific Islander and wish for a community where you can safely share your thoughts and engage in fun activities, the Asian Student Coalition is the perfect place for you.
