High school can be a very confusing, overwhelming, and trying time for new students at a boarding school. To begin the new school year, The Log interviewed some seniors around the school to see what advice they had for new underclassmen.
Mavis O’Neil ‘26, a day student at Tabor who has been at Tabor all four years, said, “It all goes by very quickly so enjoy the time while you have it.”
Jack Nyguen ‘26, an international student, advised, “Do not be afraid to ask for help from other students and teachers. If you try to get through everything on your own, it will be tough.” Tabor has many resources that should be taken advantage of. From ASSIST and Proctors to peers and teachers, Tabor’s resources can assist with any problem that may arise.
Willard Garside ‘26, a proctor in Makepeace, offered more advice. “Meet everyone you can, go out, say hi to that person and start a conversation. If you judge someone before you even meet them, you could miss out on an amazing friend.”
While Tabor is not necessarily large, it can be hard to meet and connect with everyone here. Put in the effort to meet new people, because you never know who could end up being your closest friend.
Frankie Paciello ‘26, a boarding student from Massachusetts, said, “Nobody will really judge or remember what you do in the long run so just be you and enjoy your time.”
Personally, I believe you should make sure you spend time with those you care about, as four years fly by incredibly fast. I also found that it’s important to buy into what Tabor offers; this school has so many unique opportunities that it would be a shame to let them go to waste.
Whatever the advice was, the general agreement is that your experience at Tabor is invaluable. Always remember to have fun, meet new people, step outside your comfort zone, and most importantly, do what makes you happy.
