This year, Tabor Academy is celebrating pride week from April 14 to 18. Throughout the week, the Tabor Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) leaders send an email to all students and faculty every day, introducing prominent LGBTQ+ activists in each core subject area. James Baldwin, a Black and queer author, was an activist during the civil rights movements; Alan Turing, a phenomenal mathematician and scientist, encrypted code for the Allies power during WWII; Sappho, a Greek Poet, explicitly expressed her “sapphic” love for women despite the taboo attitude to lesbian love; Sally Ride, a physicist and women’s rights advocate, is the first female astronaut that entered space.
On Monday, Peyton Wolfe ‘25 (they/them) read “Dear” by Donika Kelly in Chapel. The poem appeals to embracing different identities. Quinn Weggler ‘25 (she/they) read “A Litany for Survival” by Audre Lorde, a poem that instills courage and emphasizes the importance of voice.
During advisory on Tuesday, all students and faculty came to the flagpole by the waterfront to witness the raising of the rainbow flag. Caleb Vuerich ‘25 (he/him) introduced a brief history and explained the meaning of the rainbow flag: Red, orange, yellow, green, indigo, and violet respectively represent life, healing, sunlight, nature, serenity, and spirit. On its left, white, blue, and pink make up the transgender pride flag; black symbolizes the victims of HIV/AIDS. After the flag was raised, everyone held a moment of silence, honoring those who have fought for the visibility of LGBTQ+ community and those who have been harmed by societal discrimination.
On Friday, the GSA will host a Bake Sale, donating the money raised to an association that supports LGBTQ+ individuals. Please come by the bake sale during the academic day and support the LGBTQ+ community. There will be rainbow themed cupcakes, cookies, and more!
