Tabor is thrilled to welcome Dr. Chin to campus, a new faculty member teaching AT Macroeconomics and US history. Dr. Chin has strong ties to New England, having spent nearly a decade in the region. Originally from Tennessee, he earned his bachelor’s degree in history at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee before pursuing both his master’s and Ph.D. at the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Chin’s educational journey has honed his expertise in the field of history, and he brings that depth of knowledge to his teaching. Beyond academics, Dr. Chin is a dorm parent in Pokoik and will be the assistant coach of the JV basketball team, a sport that he has been passionate about since his own high school days.
Dr. Chin’s path to Tabor came about somewhat unexpectedly. Though he worked at Providence College before coming here, he was introduced to the world of high school education while filling in for a friend on parental leave. For Dr. Chin, teaching at the high school level is a more rewarding experience than teaching in college. He is drawn to Tabor’s rigorous academic environment and holistic approach to education, where learning extends beyond the classroom. Through dorm life, sports, and co-curricular activities, he is eager to contribute to and learn from the community he’s now a part of.
Interestingly, Dr. Chin didn’t always envision himself as a teacher. Coming from a family rooted in the medical field, he initially considered following the family’s legacy. However, he recognized science wasn’t his calling whereas history sparked his passion. He became a history teacher because of his desire to help people — just like his parents — but in his own way.
What does Dr. Chin enjoy most about being a teacher? It’s the connections he forms with students. Serving as a mentor and advisor, he finds immense value in building relationships and making history an engaging and fun subject. Although grading isn’t his favorite part of the job, he jokes, “I teach for free, they pay me for grading.”
When he’s not in the classroom or coaching basketball, you might catch Dr. Chin listening to music with his headphones. He’s a fan of Tom Petty and Americana rock, which keeps him grounded and energized throughout the day.
